실리콘이미지, 히타치, 마쓰시타, 소니, 도시바, 톰슨, 필립스 등이 가전제품을 위한 새로운 인터페이스 규격인 고선명 멀티미디어 인터페이스(HDMI:High Definition Multimedia Interface) 워킹그룹을 구성하고 두 달 후 HDMI 0.9 규격을 발표했다. 이 규격은 고선명 비디오와 다중채널 오디오를 단일 디지털 인터페이스로 통합할 수 있게 해준다. HDMI가 DVI와 다른 점은 크기가 더 작고 HDCP 암호기능이 내장됐으며 다중채널 오디오를 지원한다는 것이다. 이처럼 DVI-HDTV 규격이 DVI 인터페이스를 가전제품에 채용하게 한 반면 HDMI 규격은 DVI를 오디오 및 비디오 가전제품에 채용할 수 있는 길을 터놓았다. HDMI의 가장 큰 매력은 디지털 오디오와 비디오를 모두 지원함으로써 유선으로 연결하지 않고서도 가정 오락기기 시스템을 구성할 수 있게 한다는 것이다.
HDMI는 최고 5 기가비트/초의 대역폭을 가진 단일, 완전 디지털 인터페이스에 고화질 비디오와 멀티채널 오디오를 결합하고 있다. HDMI가 가진 주요 이점들은 압축되지 않은 디지털 품질, 케이블선 사용의 축소, 광범위한 종류의 CE 부품들에 적합한 사용자 친화적인 소형 커넥터를 포함한다. HDMI는 또한 기기들간의 양방향 통신을 지원하기 때문에 DTV로 하여금 영상을 최고 수준으로 제공하는 방법을 지능적으로 결정할 수 있게 해준다. HDMI는 지난 2003년 1월에 발표된 이래 30개 이상의 기업들이 HDMI v 1.0 표준 채택업체들이 됐다.
What is HDMI? HDMI (High-Definition Multimedia Interface) is the first industry-supported, uncompressed, all-digital audio/video interface. HDMI provides an interface between any audio/video source, such as a set-top box, DVD player, and A/V receiver and an audio and/or video monitor, such as a digital television (DTV).
HDMI supports standard, enhanced, or high-definition video, plus multi-channel digital audio on a single cable. It transmits all ATSC HDTV standards and supports 8-channel digital audio, with bandwidth to spare to accommodate future enhancements and requirements.
Who supports HDMI? The HDMI Founders include leading consumer electronics manufacturers Hitachi, Matsushita Electric Industrial (Panasonic), Philips, Sony, Thomson (RCA), Toshiba, and Silicon Image. Digital Content Protection, LLC (a subsidiary of Intel) is providing High-bandwidth Digital Content Protection (HDCP) for HDMI. In addition, HDMI has the support of major motion picture producers Fox, Universal, Warner Bros. and Disney, and system operators DirecTV, EchoStar (Dish Network) as well as CableLabs.
How do consumers benefit from HDMI? The new HDMI digital interconnect provides:
Superior, uncompressed digital video and audio quality
Simple, user-friendly connector that replaces the maze of cabling behind the entertainment center
Integrated remote control
A popular interface enabling the transmission of high-definition content. HDMI opens the floodgate of digital content from major motion picture producers
When will the HDMI specification be released? The HDMI 1.0 specification is available now. CE manufacturers may begin designing products incorporating the HDMI standard-addressing consumer demand for HD programming and for DTVs that display this content.
How can I get the HDMI 1.0 Specification? Parties interested in obtaining the HDMI 1.0 Specification are required to first download and sign the HDMI Adopter Agreement or Test Equipment Maker Agreement (available at agreements) and remit payment of the annual fee. Once payment and two signed copies of the appropriate agreement have been received, HDMI Licensing, LLC will send a login name and password to the registered email address in order to download the 1.0 Spec.
Can I review the HDMI Specification before deciding to pay for a license? The HDMI Specification is only available to those parties that have signed an Adopter Agreement and remitted their payment. However, the HDMI Founders have created an Informational Version of the Specification that interested parties can review to help them determine if they want to license the complete version of the Specification.
When will prototypes of HDMI products be available? HDMI-based prototype devices were first demonstrated at CES in January 2003. The CE industry is currently transitioning from DVI to HDMI connections. Backward- compatible with the DVI 1.0 specification, HDMI enables both multi-channel digital audio and uncompressed video transmission over a single cable and connector, and in combination with HDCP addresses content providers' requirement for a secure interface to protect high-quality content from unauthorized redistribution.
When will consumers be able to purchase products with HMDI? The first HDMI products were announced in Q3 2003 and are expected to be available for consumer purchase in the fall of 2003.
What is the life expectancy of HDMI? HDTV uses less than 1/2 of HDMI's available 5 Gbps bandwidth. With capacity to spare, HDMI can incorporate new technology advancements and capabilities long into the foreseeable future.
When will the details of the licensing terms be available? How do I obtain a license to the HDMI Specification? HDMI is licensed under reasonable and non-discriminatory terms. The Adopter Agreement or Test Equipment Maker Agreement detailing the licensing terms is available at agreements. Please follow the instructions for downloading and submitting the appropriate agreement along with your payment in order to obtain a license to the Specification.
What's the difference between the Adopter Agreement and the Test Equipment Maker Agreement, and which one should I sign? The Adopter Agreement is offered for those parties that desire to make and sell HDMI-based products such as DVD players, Set-top boxes, TVs, semiconductors, cables and connectors, etc. The Test Equipment Maker Agreement is offered for those parties that desire to make and sell test equipment such as oscilloscopes, wave form generators and other measurement tools designed to assist manufacturers in using the Compliance Test Specification to test their HDMI products for compliance with the HDMI Specification.
Does HDMI provide a secure interface? HDMI, when used in combination with HDCP, provides a secure audio/video interface that meets the security requirements of content providers and systems operators.
What are the advantages of HDMI over existing analog interfaces such as composite, S-Video and component video?
Quality HDMI transfers uncompressed digital audio and video for the highest, crispest image quality.
All Digital HDMI ensures an all-digital rendering of video without the losses associated with analog interfaces and their unnecessary digital-to-analog conversions.
Low-cost HDMI provides the quality and functionality of a digital interface while also supporting uncompressed video formats in a simple, cost-effective manner.
Audio HDMI supports multiple audio formats, from standard stereo to multi-channel surround-sound.
Ease-of-use HDMI combines video and multi-channel audio into a single cable, eliminating the cost, complexity, and confusion of multiple cables currently used in A/V systems.
Intelligence HDMI supports communication between the video source (such as a DVD player) and the DTV, enabling new functionality.
Is HDMI backward-compatible with DVI (Digital Visual Interface)? Yes, HDMI is fully backward-compatible with DVI using the CEA-861 profile for DTVs. HDMI DTVs will display video received from existing DVI-equipped products, and DVI-equipped TVs will display video from HDMI sources.
Will current HD TVs and set-top boxes using DVI-HDTV be compatible with HDMI devices? Yes. Currently there are TVs with DVI-HDTV inputs available from a variety of manufacturers. Those devices will be compatible with future HDMI-equipped products.
What types of video does HDMI support? HDMI has the capacity to support existing high-definition video formats (720p, 1080i, and even 1080p). It also has the flexibility to support enhanced definition formats such as 480p, as well as standard definition formats such as NTSC or PAL.
What is the Compliance Test Specification? The Compliance Test Specification (CTS) was developed by the HDMI Founders to assist manufacturers in ensuring the compliance of their products with the HDMI Specification. It consists of numerous tests designed to check for compatibility of various HDMI-related aspects of a product, including audio, video, EDID, electrical signaling, protocols, etc. The HDMI Compliance Test Specification represents the minimum compliance testing required for HDMI products, and it is up to each manufacturer to fully test product functionality and interoperability.
How can I get the Compliance Test Specification? The 1.0 version of the Compliance Test Specification is available to all parties that have licensed the HDMI 1.0 Specification.
What is an Authorized Testing Center and how do I contact one? The HDMI Founders have established certain Authorized Testing Centers (ATC) where licensed manufacturers can bring products for compliance testing. Currently, ATCs are located at Matsushita Electric Industrial in Osaka, Japan, and Silicon Image in Sunnyvale, CA, USA. The ATC's can be contacted as follows:

Does HDMI accommodate long cable lengths? Yes. HDMI technology has been designed to use standard copper cable construction at long lengths. In order to allow cable manufacturers to improve their products through the use of new technologies, HDMI specifies the required performance of a cable but does not specify a maximum cable length. Cable manufacturers are expected to sell reasonably priced copper cables at lengths of up to 15 meters. As semiconductor technology improves, even longer stretches can be reached with fiber optic cables, and with active cable technologies such as amplifiers or repeaters.
When will HDMI cables be available? Due to the rapid adoption of HDMI among CE manufacturers and the demand we are seeing from end-customers, HDMI Licensing, LLC is in active discussions with cable manufacturers about supplying the retail channel with HDMI cables. Since the vast majority of the market requires 5m and shorter cables, we expect manufacturers to make these cables available first. We do expect some manufacturers to market 5-15m (and beyond) HDMI cables as the market dictates and on a more limited basis. We will post this information on the HDMI website as it becomes available.
제 피씨모니터가 23인치 이고 TV 가 47인치 입니다.
피씨와 TV 가 거리가 좀 있어서 이제품을 구매하였는데 . 23인치에서 보여주는 화질이나 47인치에서 출력 하는 화질의 차이를 모를 정도 입니다.
dvi 캐이블은 거리가 멀어질수록 노이즈 가 심하여 좋은케이블을 사용해야 한다고 다들 그래서 구매후 사용중인데 상당히 흡족하게 사용중입니다 . ^^

컴퓨터와 연결해서 영화를 보는데 이전까지는 RGB케이블로
연결을 했었어요
항상 뭔가좀 아쉽고 거슬렸는데
이번에 큰맘 먹고 HDMI to DVI 케이블을 하나 장만 했거든요
결과는 정말 대만족입니다
제가 모니터를 17인치 LCD를 쓰고있는데
정말 모니터보다 더깨끗하게 나오더라고요
혹시 집에 PDP 가지고 계신분이나 구입하실 예정이신 분들은
싼 RGB케이블 사서 대충 보지 라고 생각하시지 마시고

딱 한번 티비로 출력되더니 그 이후로는 자꾸 티비에서 신호없음 이라고 떠요 ㅠㅠㅠ

우선 해상도의 설정문제일수도 있으니 해상도 부분을 조절해보시면서 설정을 해보시길 바랍니다
최저 해상도로 테스트를 해보시고 맞는 해상도로 해보시구요 그래도 안되신다면
단자를 확인해보셔야 할것 같습니다 케이블 제품은 전자제품이 아니기때문에
특별히 외상이나 단선이 되지 않는 이상은 고장이 나질 않습니다
티비쪽 제조사측과도 한번 상담을 받아보시길 바랍니다

기존에 DVI 케이블을 가지고 계시다면은 젠더를 구매해서 사용하는게 좋기는 하겠지만은
그런게 아니시라면은 케이블을 DVI HDMI 타입으로 구매하시는게 좋습니다.
젠더를 통하면은 약간 신호가 떨어질수 있습니다.

1080i 의 경우 저가형 케이블에서 간혹 안되는 경우가 있기는 하나 1080P의 경우는
몰렉스 제품군에서는 모두 지원을 합니다.

집에 tv는 LG 32FS3D-NB 구요.. 보니까 HDMI 단자 있구요.. 컴퓨터 그래픽카드엔 DVI 단자 있습니다. 연결 가능한지 문의 드리구요. 음성도 이 케이블로 연결 되는건가요? 아님 따로 케이블을 사야 하나요? 컴퓨터 사운드카드는 일반적인걸로 이어폰잭 같은거 꽂는 그런 식입니다.
